Rossendale is about to become the go-to destination for families looking to enjoy the outdoors together. Thanks to funding from BPRCVS, a fresh programme of family-friendly activities will run from January through June 2026. This initiative offers a fantastic chance for families to get active, explore nature, and learn new skills in a supportive environment.

Whether you are a family that loves adventure or one that enjoys hands-on projects, this programme has something for everyone. Activities include rock climbing, mountain biking, paddle boarding, and bike trail maintenance sessions. Each activity is designed to be accessible and fun for all ages and skill levels.

What the Programme Offers

The new outdoor family activity programme focuses on four main activities:

  • Rock Climbing

Families can try climbing sessions led by experienced instructors. These sessions teach basic climbing techniques, safety measures, and build confidence. The climbing locations are carefully chosen to suit beginners and children.

  • Mountain Biking

Mountain biking sessions will introduce families to local trails. Riders will learn bike handling skills, trail safety, and enjoy guided rides through scenic routes. Bikes and helmets are provided for those who need them.

  • Paddle Boarding

Paddle boarding on calm waters offers a gentle but engaging way to enjoy the outdoors. Families will receive instruction on balance, paddling techniques, and water safety. This activity is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

  • Bike Trail Maintenance Sessions

These sessions give families a chance to contribute to the local outdoor community by helping maintain bike trails. Participants learn about trail care, environmental impact, and teamwork while working outdoors.

Each activity is scheduled regularly between January and June 2026, allowing families to pick the sessions that fit their interests and availability.

Why Families Should Join

Outdoor activities offer many benefits for families. They encourage physical fitness, improve mental well-being, and strengthen family bonds through shared experiences. This programme makes it easy for families to try new activities without needing prior experience or expensive equipment.

The sessions are designed to be inclusive and welcoming. Instructors focus on safety and fun, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and supported. This is a great way for families to spend quality time together away from screens and daily routines.

How to Participate

Families interested in joining can find all the details on the programme’s Facebook events page. The page lists dates, times, locations, and any requirements for each activity. Booking in advance is recommended as spaces may be limited.

Equipment such as bikes, helmets, climbing gear, and paddle boards are provided for participants who do not have their own. This removes common barriers to trying new outdoor activities.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Programme

  • Dress appropriately for outdoor activities: wear comfortable clothes, sturdy shoes, and bring layers for changing weather.

  • Stay hydrated and bring snacks, especially for longer sessions.

  • Arrive a little early to get familiar with the location and meet the instructors.

  • Encourage children to ask questions and try their best, regardless of skill level.

  • Take photos and share your experiences to inspire other families to join.

Building a Stronger Outdoor Community in Rossendale

This programme is more than just activities. It aims to build a community of families who enjoy and care for Rossendale’s natural spaces. The bike trail maintenance sessions, in particular, help participants understand the importance of preserving outdoor areas for future generations.

By joining, families become part of a growing network that supports healthy, active lifestyles and environmental stewardship. This creates lasting benefits for the whole community.
